Coping with Your Health Conditions and
Fitness Challenges

Unfortunately, many dads face their own special set of health and fitness challenges.  These challenges arise because of bad genes, bad luck, and sometimes, bad personal decisions.  Disability, disease, addiction, and lethargy are at the root of most health and fitness problems dads encounter.  Irrespective of the problem’s source, this site provides dads with tools to cope effectively with their conditions and transform their lifestyle to limit or eliminate the negative outcomes they and their children may experience.

In recent years, the public, media, nonprofits, health care educators, researchers, and various popular magazines have focused more attention on men's health issues.  Magazines like Men's Health and Men's Fitness encourage men to think more carefully about their bodies, health, and fitness.  Meanwhile, global and U.S.-based initiatives have encouraged both men and fathers to develop a more health-conscious lifestyle.  For example, see MenCare: A Global Fatherhood Campaign, Men's Health Network, and the Boys Initiative as well as other resources referenced in a separate section of this website.

Most countries have some form of protection in place for those with disabilities or dealing with certain conditions, but sometimes justice lapses and help is needed to make sure everyone is treated fairly under the law. Organizations like this one provide a resource for parents disenfranchised through no fault of their own who are struggling legally to obtain a fair opportunity to raise their kids well.

Though people usually think of genetic problems or cancers when they think of difficult to deal with health conditions for parents, one often-neglected--but possibly critical--category of personal challenge is that of mental health. Raising a child can be difficult even without a mental illness, but having a mental illness and raising a child requires an even more committed effort.

One of the most painful parts of having a genetically influenced health condition is the possibility of passing it along to one's children. This resource provides a list of six common inherited health conditions; though we can't change our genes, we can take them into consideration, and many such health conditions can be detected, delayed, or even prevented through testing and appropriate life strategies.
