Teachers' Corner
Teachers play a unique role in what I call the health matrix described on the homepage. Specifically, educators have the opportunity to teach children directly about nutrition, fitness, and safety and to improve their health habits. But they can also work with children to educate their fathers and other guardians and encourage fathers/guardians to more involved as healthy role models for their children.
The Teachers page provides resources that can be used in the classroom to promote healthy lifestyles. I hope that by using the resources provided here, teachers will expose students to classroom themes about health, fitness, nutrition, and safety throughout the school year. Teachers can give students opportunities to use a computer to choose a kid-friendly recipe, game, or fitness video that they can share with dad (and mom). They can e-mail the link to dad, print out the resource, or write down the URL. Teachers can also encourage kids to take a picture of themselves cooking with dad, exercising with dad, or playing an online health/fitness game with dad which can then be displayed on a classroom board. If equipped with a projector, teachers can show fitness videos in class to get kids excited about teaching dad some new moves.
This page offers teachers lesson plans that are organized by grade level, fitness/nutrition, language arts/math, or both. Many include printable in-class worksheets and activities that can be taken home and hung on a refrigerator or used as homework to complete with dad.
Remember, teachers can play an important role in fostering health-based communication and activities between parents and children.
